Research Descriptions:
Short: Pathogenesis of corneal edema and drug delivery for posterior segment eye disease.
Long: The overall objective of Dr. Edelhauser¿s research program is to study the pathogenesis of corneal edema, which occurs from disease (i.e., endothelial dystrophies, inflammation) and which occurs following intraocular surgery. The increase in corneal thickness may be the result of an increase in stromal water and/or the loss of stromal proteoglycans and glycoproteins resulting from a loss of the corneal endothelial barrier and/or pump function. To address these hypotheses, our laboratory conducts studies in the following areas: physiological mechanism of corneal transparency; the role of sulfhydryls on corneal endothelial function; corneal permeability and cellular toxicity of intraocular irrigating solutions and drugs; physiological effects of cataract surgery and vitrectomy on ocular tissues; dynamics of intraocular fluids; corneal toxicology; corneal extracellular matrix; corneal epithelial and endothelial physiology; and the physiological importance of tears.
