Research Interests:
Dr. Compans has been involved extensively in vaccine research including approaches for mucosal immunization. His studies have included the use of purified glycoproteins of human parainfluenza viruses for systemic and intranasal immunization; mucosal immunization with microencapsulated vaccines for SIV, influenza, and parainfluenza viruses; development of recombinant expression systems for HIV antigens; and development of virus-like particles containing high levels of HIV Env proteins as a candidate vaccine. He has previously served as Principal Investigator of an NIH contract to develop subunit vaccines for human parainfluenza viruses, has served as a consultant on several SBIR grants on vaccine development, and has served as Principal Investigator of an NCVDG grant from NIAID. He was involved in design and analysis of a human clinical trial of a microencapsulated oral influenza vaccine.
