Home : Emory and Atlanta : Life In Atlanta
Emory University is located in Atlanta, Georgia which is known as the capital city of the southeast. Atlanta is a wooded, cosmopolitan, and progressive city located in the piedmont of the Appalachian Mountains (within two hours drive from the high Appalachians and less than five hours from either Atlantic or gulf coasts). The fast-growing city is a transportation hub, not just for the country but also for the world: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is one of the nation's busiest in daily passenger flights and has direct flights to Europe, South America, and Asia. The 1996 Olympics were hosted here, and Atlanta is known as the convention city of the south.
The Emory campus is 15 minutes from downtown Atlanta and even closer to charming pedestrian neighborhoods like Virginia Highlands, Little Five Points and downtown Decatur. You will see both Emory students and faculty in these areas enjoying a unique meal, live music, chatting in a pub or perhaps shopping in the boutiques. You will also see people you know selecting delicious food and wine at the Dekalb Farmer’s Market or Alon’s Bakery.
There are many cultural events for those living in or visiting Atlanta both on Emory campus and around town. Look for the Emory Symphony Orchestra’s free performances once or twice a semester and other events of music, theater, dance, etc. that make up the Arts at Emory. Midtown Atlanta has numerous museums, galleries, theaters, as well as art, science and cultural organizations (listed below).
For outdoor enthusiasts, Atlanta is a great choice because of its temperate climate and natural resources. There are many winter days warm enough to go hiking in north Georgia, play tennis or climb to the top of Stone Mountain. Lullwater Woods is a 20+ acre forest on campus that is an ideal place for walkers and runners because it is closed to vehicles and has beautiful scenery with the trees and lake. It is an oasis on campus that lets you forget about the city when it becomes too hectic.
Atlanta has something for every sports fan and is home to the Atlanta Braves (baseball), Atlanta Hawks (basketball), Atlanta Falcons (football), and Atlanta Thrashers (hockey). The Atlanta Track Club attracts 50,000 runners to its annual 10K Peachtree Road Race every July 4th. Atlanta also hosts the largest local tennis organization in the world, with 75,000 dues-paying members.
