Emory Competitive Fellowships

Emory offers several fellowships to outstanding applicants each year. The Programs nominate applicants for these fellowships. There are no additional forms for the applicant to complete, but all application material must arrive by the deadline date.

  • The Woodruff Fellowship is the most prestigious fellowship offered by the Graduate School and is awarded to exceptional students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement. The fellowship covers all tuition and fees, provides a $4,000 supplement to the standard Division stipend and $1,000 for educational/travel expenses per year for the five year length of the award. U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible.

  • The Emory Graduate Diversity Fellowship (EGDF) promotes the diversity of the graduate student body. As a community we recognize that students from groups not traditionally present in the university bring new perspectives that enrich the fields of graduate study and enhance the educational experience of all students. Many individuals have the potential to expand the methodologies, the topics of research, and applications of various disciplines because of their unique background. Eligible students may belong to a specific ethnic group, race, culture, socioeconomic group, or gender traditionally underrepresented in their proposed field of of study, or possess other qualities that will enhance the diverse community of scholars in the Graduate School. The Graduate School considers each applicant's promise of making a notable contribution to their incoming class by exhibiting particular strengths or characteristics, including a unique intellectual achievement, employment experience, nonacademic performance, or personal background. The fellowship covers all tuition and fees and provides a $4,000 supplement to the standard Division stipend and $500 for educational/travel expenses per year for the five year length of the award. U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible.

  • Facilitating Academic Careers in Engineering and Science (FACES) is a program of the National Science Foundation Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate. The fellowship provides a $2,000 supplement to the standard Division stipend for years 1 and 2, and the stipend increases to a $3,000 supplement in years 3 through 5. FACES Fellows are required to attend seminars that will be held no more than once a month. These seminars will focus on various topics critical to a successful graduate and professional career. U.S. citizens and permanent residents who belong to an ethnic group underrepresented at the higher levels of science are eligible.

  • The Division Scholar Fellowship is offered by our department. Each Program offers the fellowship to their most promising applicants and selection criteria varies by Program. The fellowship provides a $2,000 supplement to the standard Division stipend for five years. All interviewed applicants are eligible for the award.

Cost of Living

The cost of living in suburban Atlanta compares very favorably to other university cities, and in only rare instances is the cost of living in the Emory area higher than that of comparable universities.  The most convenient area in which to live near Emory is Decatur, so this city was used in the “Salary Calculator” (www.homefair.com/homefair/calc/salcalc.html) for comparison with other cities.
