Americans Living Longer Than Ever

Dr. Solveig Cunningham, faculty member in Nutrition and Health Sciences, was mentioned in CBS NewsMSN and Washington Post for her studies of death rates during eras of financial hardship.

According to a new government report, U.S. life expectancy inched up again and death rates fell. Whatever the reason, "it's kind of surprising," said Cunningham. The overall statistics suggest our society is getting better at medically managing conditions like diabetes and heart disease, she said. But maybe "we're not able to manage mental health as well, resulting in devastating results[such as] the increasing suicide rate," she said.
