Duration of Stipend and Requesting End of Funding

The Collective Bargaining Agreement’s (CBA) article on continuity of funding guarantees five years of stipend and tuition support for PhD students in good academic standing who are not dismissed from the program. Students in their first five years of their training will be paid until the end of the last month of the academic term in which they defend their thesis, unless: (1) their research appointment (RA) stipulates an earlier date (e.g., the date on which they have satisfied all requirements for the Ph.D.); or (2) they voluntarily request the end of stipend payments through the GDBBS Student Request to End Funding Form because they no longer wish to fulfill the obligations of their RTA and/or if they have taken a new paid position.

Students in their sixth year and beyond in good academic standing may continue to receive stipend support at the discretion of Emory University. Students in the sixth year and beyond will receive the stipend as long as they are: (1) enrolled in LGS and making appropriate academic progress; and (2) they hold an RA with their advisor as supervisor. Such students will be paid until the end of the last month of the academic term in which they defend their thesis, unless: (1) their research appointment (RA) stipulates an earlier date (e.g., the date on which they have satisfied all requirements for the Ph.D.); or 2) they voluntarily request the end of stipend payments through the GDBBS Student Request to End Funding Form because they no longer wish to fulfill the obligations of their RTA and/or they have taken a new paid position.

Based on the above, faculty whose student has not submitted the end of funding form but who believe that the student’s stipend should end before the end of the last month of the term in which they will graduate, should reach out to the GDBBS Director to discuss the situation.

Health Insurance Coverage in the Semester of Graduation

To determine when their health insurance will end, students should contact Student Health Services or Aetna by visiting the Aetna website or calling 1-877-480-4161.

Please note that access to all campus services, including CAPS, will end on the last day of the term.

Professional Development Support
Students should visit Professional Development Support (PDS) Funds for guidelines on how to apply for PDS funds from the Laney Graduate School. In addition to the Laney Graduate School requirements,  the Graduate Division requires that students present their work at the conference in order to be eligible for funds. Students should read all of the information so they understand the policies and procedures.
